Cartagena de Indias & The Islands
Emerging from the Caribbean Sea floor more than 5,000 million years ago! The Archipelago of Our Lady of the Rosario (Rosario Islands – 27 in total) are 24 nautical miles off the coast from Cartagena de Indias.
The Rosario Islands were declared a National Park & Aquatic Preserve in 1977. Park regulations now protect the sea floor and surrounding ecosystem, as the coral reefs (among the largest in the Caribbean) contain sea flora, fauna, mangroves and island lagoons that at the last count were estimated to be home to more than 1,300 species of plants and animals!
Only a 45 minute power boat ride through the bay of Cartagena de Indias will pass through Bocachica (Little Mouth), a small coastal town with 17th Century Spanish Colonial fortifications, originally built to protect the main city harbor from the pirates and buccaneers of the colonial period. Then observe or pass through Baru (the closest land mass to the islands), and then an hour past the Rosario Islands is the Archipelago of San Bernardo, where many believe some of the best spots for scuba diving exist of anywhere in Colombia.
