Marble Island is the jewel in the crown of the Duke Island group, which covers approximately 50 sq. kms of cobalt waters off the central Queensland coast, some 115 kms south of Mackay.

In terms of topography and vegetation, the island is typical of the 'Continental' island masses which extend along Queensland's sub-tropical coastline, the most well known of which are the renowned Whitsunday Group.

This privately owned secluded haven, with an on-site manager, is yours to freely explore and unwind on, surrounded by blue skies, sandy beaches and the imposing beauty of the natural landscape.

Tourist accommodation is limited to only one visiting party at a single time, setting this secret retreat apart from most Queensland island holiday destinations - the absolute escape for those seeking sublime levels of peace and
relaxation.

History

Like many of the Queensland's continental islands, Marble Island was originally settled and developed in the first half of the 1900s as a pastoral enterprise.

A lone grave on one of the islands most picturesque bluffs is testament to the earlier generations of rural pioneers who have worked and lived on Marble Island.

In 1904, Iron Island, a small outcrop from the main island, was developed and mined as a source of iron ore which was shipped to the mainland for processing.

Marble Island has been passed down over the years through many owners. The present owner acquired it as a sheep station in the late 1960s and subsequently developed it as a cattle property. While the island no longer runs as many cattle, this development entailed a major investment to develop the island with basic infrastructure: an airstrip, many dams, cattle yards, refrigeration rooms, generator & working sheds, along with manager's residence, owner's holiday residence, and in a secluded area of the front beach is the 'farmstay' beach cottage.

The owner's family still periodically uses Marble Island to escape and re-energise in this private and tranquil reserve.

Accommodation

Marble Island's accommodation has been intentionally limited to one party of guests at a time to ensure maximum privacy for our visitors.

Your self-contained accommodation is a modern comfortable furnished cottage located right on your own beach overlooking the tranquil waters of Home Bay.

Designed to capitalize on the magnificent sea views on offer, the cottage features a fully equipped kitchen, living room and two large bedrooms, both with ensuite bathrooms. The main bedroom can be configured as either a single king or two single beds (when booking please confirm your preference). A second bedroom has two single beds with comfortable trundles (i.e. four single beds).

An expansive covered patio with BBQ provides an ideal outdoor area for dining or enjoying a relaxing drink while looking out over the bay. The cottage is fully insect screened and has satellite TV.

Fresh linen and bath and beach towels are supplied weekly as part of the tariff. Fishing rods, oyster knives, basic snorkelling equipment and beach umbrella are supplied for guests' use.

The beach cottage sleeps 4 adults or 2 adults and up to four children comfortably. A maximum of 10 additional guests can be accommodated if visitors bring their own tents and camp equipment.

Idyllic Location

Marble Island lies in the Great Barrier Reef marine Park's warm, southern waters, 20 kms off the Capricorn Coast, mid-way between Rockhampton and Mackay.

Named for the abundant white and pink marble found locally, 800 hectare Marble island is part of the Duke Group, renowned by seasoned "yachties" as one of the most picturesque archipelagos on the central Queensland Coast.

The island and its surrounding waters form a natural habitat for a host of sea birds and marine life, and the island is a breeding ground for Australia's green turtles. During August to October, the local waterways form a part of the annual migratory path for pods of sperm whales and their calves.

All this, and within 3 to 4 hours flying time from Brisbane and Sydney.

Getting There

Seemingly a "thousand miles" from civilization and the bustle of today's busy life, Marble island can be comfortably accessed in a couple of hours flying time from any state capital on Australia's eastern seaboard.

With its own airstrip, the island is easily accessed from its two main regional getaways, Rockhampton and Mackay. Both centres are connected by several jet services daily to all Australian capital cities by leading commercial carriers Qantas and Virgin Blue.
